Pasadena is a beautiful city located in Los Angeles County and is home to the annual Rose Bowl football game as well as the Tournament of Roses parade. However, that is not all that the city has to offer. It is home to numerous cultural and scientific institutions that are littered throughout the city. The cities population was estimated to be around 143 667 in 2009, making it the 7th largest city in the county and the 168th largest in the United States. Pasadena was the first city to be incorporated in Los Angeles County in 1886. The main reason it was incorporated was to get rid of the numerous saloons that were littered throughout the city. Pasadena is one of the major culture hubs of the San Gabriel Valley.
There are several industries that thrive in Pasadena, some of which include design, engineering, finance, heath care, and technology. There are a variety of schools in the city which utilizes the populations creative potential. Downtown is exciting and vibrant, with a variety of cultures and ethnicities interacting. The city is central to the Southern California Market Place.
One of the major attractions in Pasadena is the annual Tournament of Roses parade, which was created after the European Festival of Roses. The parade has been a yearly occurrence since January 1, 1980 and requires all entrants to have flowers, greenery, or other natural material covering the majority of the float. The cities goal was the showcase the abundance of natural beauty as well as the beautiful climate the city had to offer while the majority of the nation was still covered under a layer of snow. The parade is almost 5.5 miles long and has everything from marching bands to stunning floats. It is guessed that over one half million roses in vials are used in each parade and that the average float costs is approximately between $75 000 - $250 000, depend on the size. There are over one million people who come to watch the famous parade.
